Freelance Writing Success Tips For Beginners

Millions of people around the world are cashing in serious dollars as freelance writers, how can you stand out as a newbie in an industry saturated with experienced expert writers? Well, this article is for you.

If you don’t know this already, a freelance writer is a person who works by the day or hour, selling their services to different employers as opposed to working for one employer for a monthly salary.

Freelance writing has unlimited earning potential and the best part, according to me is that you can work from anywhere. You have the luxury of scheduling your working hours. That said, consider this a business if you want to do it full time because like any other job, nothing comes easy.

Here are three tips that will make your journey simpler and increase your chances of success.

1.Research

The most important point, is to do some research. Freelance Writing is different from the writing we did in school, you don’t want to start without knowing the skills and tools you need.

Training is Important, not really compulsory but what better way to learn than by taking some lessons from experts in the industry? A simple search on YouTube or Google may overwhelm you, a trainer will break all this down for you.

2.Take Action

Let’s be honest, some dreams, goals and aspirations never see the light of day. You know what you want, what you need to do to get it but you don’t take any action. The dreams remain buried in the bottomless pit of procrastination. Don’t let this be you. Once you have done extensive research and have decided on the kind of writing you want to do, start!

You don’t necessarily need to niche down but, identifying a few areas you can write own is a great place to start. Potential clients need to see some of your work, these articles will help build your portfolio. Again, a trainer will be of help here, to evaluate your articles.

You can create a blog for free on Medium or WordPress. You can also Guest host on somebody’s blog who specializes in the same niche as you. Lastly, if your pockets align, you can create your own Website. This is the best option and has several benefits.

3.Start Working

The end goal is to make the serious dollars we mentioned in the beginning right? By now you have known how to write winning proposals and it is time to start the paid work.

There are several websites like Upwork, Fiver, PeoplePerHour that offer Freelance Writers a platform to meet potential employers.

Create an account on these sites and start bidding for jobs. You can also use social platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook to sell your services. Another popular way is cold pitching where you reach out to clients directly through email.

Bottom line, Freelance Writing is not easy. Time, effort, consistency and discipline are some of the keys to success. Here is a bit of a downer, you will get rejected- severally, but so did many expert writers when they just started. Be resilient, when you eventually get your first client, deliver pure gold. If this client doesn’t hire you for another project, their good review will undoubtedly land you your next!
